Dubuque Iowa Feb 20th, 1895
My dear friend
I recei(ved) late last night yours of the 17th with inclosure & this AM came the Sun of the 17th containing your beautiful article wh(ich) is exceedingly correct, except that I took my seat as Delegate 1st Monday of Dec 1835/ not b). Doctor Linn, the model U.S. Senator, his colleague Benton said, & I went the dwelling house then on the corner of B & 3rd Street & kept house together & we gave the splendid party to which I escorted the beautiful, talented & accomplished Miss Anna Calhoun & returned her to her father’s home Cor(ner) 8th & D (stree)ts at about 2 AM when she made me the promise about her father my sincere friend ever since our first meeting Dec 5 1835.
I send you, here with, one dollar note to pay the articles or papers with my 1 photo I send one dollar, also, to the Sun for its article. Mr. Dana Sew was a warm friend & admirer of mine and complimented me very highly in July 1888. Is the talented Senator still alive.
I hope to be able to pay for the Cyclopedias by now I have but about $30 & own no real estate or other income except the $20 monthly pension. I represented Michigan & Wisconsin as delegate both at the same time for a short time.
