My respected & beloved Madam

On my return home on the 16th inst I found on desk your kind letter which overjoyed my octogenarian heart & made me feel as if had heard from an angel in heaven where I supposed your noble soul had long since gone to be with that of your God-like & sainted husband.

I have only time to say that I am grateful beyond expression for your thoughtful kindness in remembering me & my wife and especially since you must of have heard of my incarceration in Fort LaFayette from the 20th of Dec 1861 till the 22d of Feb, inclusive because I had the temerity to write a letter of friendship to my old college mate at Lex Ky, Jefferson Davis, whom I served with through the Black Hawk War & afterwards in the U.S. Senate & helped to have made Franklin Pierce’s Secy of War. But that the devil called Seward to his home I wd certainly have made the old cowardly hypocrite

2/pay me a round sum for his treachery & cruelty to me.  So at least my counsel Chs O’Conar & JW McKeon thought as did my Atty Mead to whom Seward’s Atty offered $5000 to discontinue my suite.

Can’t you send me a photograph likeness of yourself that my wife & I may feast our eyes upon it, if but for a few days, when I will return it to you if you desire it.

I have just written Mrs. A.C. Dodge at Burlington where her husband died on the 18th of last Nov. & where I acted as one of the 16 pall bearers at his the finest & most impressive funeral I ever attended.  When & where did your noble husband die.  How well & happily I recollect him & his repeated efforts to make Gov. Henry Dodge the nominee for Prest of the US at Baltimore in 1848, the old hero twice declining the distinguishing honor.

I’m working hard for Cleveland & Hendricks for I’ll leave the U.S. if Blaine is elected.  Your devotedly attached friend Geo. W. Jones

Hon. Mrs. Linn Boyd

Paducah Ky

My youngest daughter is named D Linn Deuss.
