Vandever, William

William Vandever was a two-term U.S. Congressman from Iowa’s Second District. At the start of the Civil War, Congressman Vandever raised the 9th Iowa Infantry and 3rd Iowa Light Artillery in his hometown of Dubuque, Iowa. Vandever served as both a U.S. Congressman and Colonel/Brigadier General in the U.S. Army from September 24, 1861 to the end of his Congressional term on March 4, 1863. After the war, Vandever was U.S. Indian Inspector under President Grant before going on to being elected to two terms to the U.S. Congress from California.
